He was born in American Falls, Idaho on Aug. 21, 1924 to James T. and Edna Sykes. He married Hazel Ann Bailey in 1952 and they have been married for 53 years. Dad's family moved to Livingston, Montana when he was 10 years old. Floating the Yellowstone River and playing pranks on the neighbors were favorite activities of the "6th Street Gang". He was born in American Falls, Idaho on Aug. 21, 1924 to James T. and Edna Sykes. He married Hazel Ann Bailey in 1952 and they have been married for 53 years. Dad's family moved to Livingston, Montana when he was 10 years old. Floating the Yellowstone River and playing pranks on the neighbors were favorite activities of the "6th Street Gang". He graduated from Park High School and joined the Marine Corp soon after. He served in some of the most hard-fought battles of the South Pacific including the battle of New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa. He served valiantly and will always be a hero to us. His Marine Corps comrades were life-long friends. He returned home, married and began his 30 year career with GMAC. The family moved to Alaska in 1962 for three wonderful years and he resided in Salt Lake since 1965. He enjoyed golf, tennis and watching the Jazz. His disappointment in life was not being recruited to play for the Jazz. They will never know what they missed. He was a Silver Life Master Duplicate Bridge player, and sang for the Oratorical Society in the Messiah for 10 yrs. He was a member of Mt. Olympus Presbyterian Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. Dad's family came first. He was so proud of his children and was a wonderful grandfather. His infectious sense of humor and gentle kidding are part of our family story. He was always there for us. He is survived by his wife, Hazel, daughters, Jill Stewart and Barbara Gentry and son, Robb (Joanne) Sykes. His sister Jo, six grandchildren, and nieces and nephews were all close to his heart. A Memorial Services to honor him will be held on Sat. Jan. 21 at Community of Grace Presbyterian Church at 3:00 p.m. All who loved him are invited to attend. COG is located at 2015 E. Newcastle Dr (8810 S.). in Sandy. Donations may be made in his name to the Utah Food Bank.
