Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 31 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Alton. Everild was born Dec. 5, 1912, at rural Remsen, the son of Charles and Josephine (Foster) Niehus. He was raised and educated in Remsen and then worked on a farm in Remsen. Everild joined the US Navy in 1940, and was assigned to the USS Oklahoma in 1940. He was a gunners mate aboard the Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, when it was capsized. Mr. Niehus was honorably discharged in 1943. Everild married Alberta Kinney on June 20, 1944. The couple moved from the Iowa farm to Pipestone, Minn, in 1957, where he and Alberta raised their family. Everild was employed as a janitor in the Pipestone schools and retired in the early 1990s. The couple moved into the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in November 1996, where Alberta Still resides. Mr. Niehus was a member of St. Mary' s Catholic Church in Remsen. He was an avid Yankee baseball fan and followed the team to the end. Survivors include his wife Alberta whom he fondly called "teacher;" three sons, Wayne, Bill and Dean; a daughter-in-law, Donna; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Don; five sisters, Rose Weiler, Teresa Kestel, Agness Cook, Cora Murray and Eda Gengler; and two brothers, Andrew and William; and a special nephew, Clark Cook.
