Description	:	Ewald "Wally" Heisler, Bismarck, died July 22, 2006, at home surrounded by his family. Ewald fought a long and courageous battle with COPD and lung cancer. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Bruce Krebbs officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Ewald was born to Thomas and Philomena (Schwahn) Heisler May 4, 1929, in Pierce County, near Esmond. He was the fourth of 12 children. In the early 1930's, the Heislers moved to the Goeffre farm located nine miles south of Esmond. Ewald attended East Fork No. 1 Township grade school and graduated in 1941. He attended Esmond High until 1943, when his parents moved to a farm three miles southeast of Harvey. He completed his high school education graduating in 1945 from Harvey High School. Since his older brothers were serving in the Army, he helped at home with the farming and worked on various construction jobs. In 1947, he became employed with O&M Elevator Co., buying and selling grain. Ewald joined the National Guard in February 1948, and became a full time employee in December 1948. Appointed a WOJG in December 1950, he entered federal service with Tank Company 164th Infantry on Jan. 1, 1951. He served at Camp Rucker, Japan and Korea, during which time he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. Upon release from active duty, Ewald continued full-time employment with the National Guard, serving over 41 years. He was transferred from Harvey to Fraine Barracks, Bismarck, in 1959, as a Field Auditor. Promotions to Supply Officer, Purchasing and Contracting Officer and Data Processing Supervisor followed. He proudly served in the National Guard and Active Service for 41 years and three months. His military grade was Chief Warrant Officer-4. Ewald and Pat Ann Murray were married Oct. 12, 1949, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Harvey. They were married 56 years at the time of his death. Their three children, Mary Kay, Cary Ann and Edna Rae, were born while the family lived in Harvey. Ewald was devoted to his family and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a life member of the American Legion, VFW, Eagles, Elks, National Guard Association, 164th Infantry Association and N.D. National Guard Officers Association. He was most active in the Legion, serving as Adjutant and Commander while in Harvey. He was also on the Board of Managers in Bismarck. He will be greatly missed by those who survive him; his wife, Pat; his children, Mary Kathryn (Bill) Wanner, Bismarck, Cary Ann Baird, Rimbey, Canada, Edna Rae (Dean) Sailer, Fort Collins, Colo.; his grandchildren, Juliet (Shane) Bogden, Edmonton, Canada, Joe, Ron and Anna Rivinius, Bismarck, Jacinta (Troy) Baker, Bismarck, Teresa Thompson, Mandan, Robert Thompson, Bismarck, Dan and Ben Gangl, Bismarck, Rebecca (Derek) Sanderson, Devils Lake, and Christine Sailer, Hamden, Conn.; 17 great-grandchildren, Megan, Jaden, Kaden, Justine, Ashley, TJ, Raynathan, Dominic, Alexus, Miranda, Arianna, Ian, Brett, Meggan, Kaitlyn, Nicholas and Cassidy; five brothers, Arthur, Eugene and Melvin, all of Velva, Daniel (Bonnie), Devils Lake, and Tom, Dickinson; and two sisters, Ernestine (Lyle) Schindler, Harvey, and Judy, Bismarck. Ewald was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leonard, Devils Lake, and Marvin and Norbert, in infancy; one sister, Lorraine Schmidgal; two grandsons, Michael and Jeremy; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Joy.
