Hicks was born May 16,1854, near Quebec, Canada, and died at Sutton, Nebr., April 17, 1933, aged 78 years, 11 months, and 1 day. At 6 years of age, he came with his parents to Kewana, Ill., and at 13 moved to Webster county, Iowa, where he homestead and grew to manhood. In 1879, he was married to Emma Weeks at Dayton, Iowa. To this union eight children were born, three girls and five boys. Floyd and Reuben, died in infancy. In 1885, he came to Nebraska and settled at Tobias, in Saline County, where he worked for the Fairmont Creamery Co. In 1893, he went to Gosper county near Elwood, Nebr. Here he united with the Methodist church. In 1900, Mr. Hicks came to Fairmont, Nebr., and three years later moved to Sutton. In 1913, he moved to Crete and four years ago again returned to Sutton. Mr. Hicks had worked for the Fairmont Creamery Co. for forty years and retired six years ago. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his wife, the following children: Mrs. Netty Thomas of Valentine, Nebr.; Mrs Sadie Burt of Elwood, Nebr.; Frank Hicks and Bert Hicks of Sutton; Arthur Hicks of Mena, Ark: and Mrs Beda Ireland of Crete, Nebr. Also twenty-three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He has two sisters and five brothers living. The funeral was held from the Congregation church at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon Rev. A. W. Lapthorne conducting the service. The songs were "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Does Jesus Care," by Mr. and Mrs Guy E. Swanson, Mrs O. P. Kohler and O. B. Whitlock. Burial was in the Sutton cemetery; the bearers were Harley Ireland, George T. Burt, August Thomas, Ray Mclinay, Ray Hamburger and Arthur Wach. All the children were present at the funeral, except Arthur of Arkansas.
