Friends described Mr. Nordyke as a very soft spoken, kind gentleman, an honest and honorable man. He was raised in a Quaker family, "and had that way about him", friends noted, also describing him as, "dignified, private, the salt of the earth, loved by many." He belonged to VFW, and the Masonic Lodge. He is well known for his many years in the pharmaceutical business here, at one time owning and operating Felix's Pharmacy, the outline of whose lettering can still be seen on The Green Building on the southwest corner of North Butte and West Walnut Streets. He graduated from Willows High School, Class of 1939. He had half a year of college in, and was working in 1942 for D.C. Linebaugh, owner of his own pharmacy in Willows. World War Two called. Mr. Nordyke resided on North Plumas Street when he went into active duty with the Navy in San Francisco in July, 1942, attaining pharmacist's mate first class. After eight weeks basic training, he attended the Medical Field Service School, Camp Elliott, San Diego, and served at the U.S. Naval Hospital in that city for three months. He then was assigned to the USS Charlevoix, a member of Company D, Second Medical Battalion, Second Marine Division. He was honored with one star in the American Area, Asiatic-Pacific Theater, the Philippine Liberation Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in Shoemaker, California, on Jan. 30, 1946. Born on July 7, 1921, in Oakland, of Felix Lysander Nordyke and Jeannette Mueller Nordyke, the family were residents of Willows at that time. His ancestry goes back a ways into American and Glenn County history. Relatives on his father's side fought in the Revolutionary War. A.A. Nordyke, his grandfather, purchased the first house in Willows, built by William K. Pendergriss. Felix Nordyke was raised in a house where West Walnut Street meets Lassen Street across from City Hall marked now by the traces of foundation. Mr. Nordyke and his wife, LaVonna Lenahan Nordyke, shared a July 7 birth date, though in different years. She passed in 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and by a sister, Dorothy Nordyke Saul of Louisiana. The couple got married while he was attending Idaho State University, from which he took a bachelor of science degree in pharmaceutical science in 1951. Mr. Nordyke later bought out Linebaugh's, which was across the street from First National Bank on Highway 99W; moving it to Butte and Walnut Streets and renamed it Felix's. After his retirement, he remained best friends with a rival drug store owner Ray Fransen of Clark's, situated on the opposite end of the block at Butte and Sycamore Streets. Around that time, he also worked a little for Bill's Drugs, later Long's Drugs, later Northern Valley Indian Health, situated on the opposite corner from Felix's. - Transcribed by M.
