Ferdinand Buescher was born on the home farm in St. Stephens precinct, January 19, 1894, and died October 6 (sic), in a contonment hospital at Edgwood (sic) Arsenal, Edgwod (sic), Md., a member of Co. His death came as a great shock to the family and comunity (sic). His sickness as stated in the published letter written by himself came from the prevailing epidemic, influenza. While our departed friend did not die in the battle line he only awaited orders. He responded with good heart to his county's call and he gave his all in the cause of America, and humanity. His death, sad though it be, is commensurate to a great degree in the triumph of right over wrong, the support of the weak against the selfish encroachment of the strong. The cause for which he paid the supreme sacrifice seems now almost within the grasp of victory and with the thousands of other young American heros (sic), his life will lived on in sacred memory to the inspiration and glory of those near and dear to him and to the everlasting credit of himself and his country. Untrained in the art of war he left the plow to assume a full man's duty in the great world struggle that that future generations might have liberty and live in peace. We owe all to him, as well as to all other of our soldier boys, living or dead, a debt of gratitude that we can never repay and only as we revere his name and support the cause in which he died can we show to the world that we appreciate his sacrifice and that he died not in vain. His death brings deep grief to friends and relatives alike. "Fernie" was one of nature's noble young fellows in its truest sense - kind, generous, manly, square. In the ball game or in his business relations, this spirit dominated his every act, and he was very popular with his associates because of his unselfish, chivalrous way and manner. In his death we suffer since condolence to the bereaved family. They have the great comfort that he lived nobly and died as a dutiful, beloved son of the land that rallied to arms in response to call of distress from o'er the sea. The remains died not reach Lawrence until Sunday morning, six days after death, when a transfer at Holdrege sent the body here on the freight. The funeral services were held in the church yard at St. Stephens, Monday at ten o'clock, attended by a very large crowd. Father Hahn, the St. Stephens pastor, was assisted by Father Lombardi of Blue Hill, and Father Becker of Lawrence. - The Locomotive
