Read More	Atchison Daily Globe, Thursday Nov 12, 1913 Ferdinand Reuthinger Dead Ferdinand Reuthinger, East Atchison's fine old man and pioneer citizen, who visited this locality first sixty-three years ago, died at 6;40 last evening. He had been ill two months and his death, which was due to old age, occurred at the Reuthinger home in East Atchison, where he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Warren Allen and her husband. It is believed that nobody now living saw the townsite of Atchison as early as he did. Born in Switzerland, in March 1829, Mr. Reuthinger came to America in 1843, landing in New Orleans, and was there in the dreadful cholera scourge of 1848-49. He worked in a cotton press next door to a hospital, and saw wagon loads of dead taken away several times a day. Later he followed the river and visited Memphis and St. Louis and experienced all the hardships incident to the early pioneers. In the spring of 1850 he came up the Missouri river to St. Joe, and walked to Savannah where he got work in a store. He spent the following winter in the south and came back to St. Joe in the spring of 1851, going south again the following winter. Early in 1852 he opened an eater house in St. Joe, in connection with a grocery store; the first in that town. There was great travel to California that year, and the prairie wanderers were his customers. There was no cooking in St. Joe's first restaurant; patrons were served cove oysters crackers, cheese, etc. He drifted to Caire, Ill in 1854, where he conducted a store on a wharf boat, mailing provisions to the emigrants on Ohio and Mississippi river boats bound for New Orleans. In the spring of 1855, he came back to St. Joe and opened a hotel, having married a St. Louis girl on his way up the river. In 1859 he built the St. Louis house in St. Joe which burned in 1861, and left him stranded again. He came to East Atchison where he farmed for three years. In the fall of 1863 he moved to this side of the river and kept a boarding house where the Blair mill now stands. In the fall of 1864 he made a trip across the plains, and upon his return located in East Atchison where although from 1871 to 1880 he lived on a farm at Sugar lake, building a brick house, which still stands. Mr. Reuthinger is survived by Mrs. Emil Winkler, Mrs. Warren Allen and Ferdinand Reuthinger Jr., all of East Atchison or vicinity; and Mrs. W.W. Harvey of Clovis N.M. , children of his first marriage, and Carl Reuthinger of Parsons, and Mr. E.B. Ellis of Waurika, Okla, children of his second marriage. Also several stepchildren. The first Mrs. Reuthinger died in the seventies, and in 1877 he married Mrs. Henry Vosse, of Atchison, who died December 6, 1911. The funeral probably will be Saturday afternoon, but will not be definitely decided upon until the absent children reach home.
