MO Local Obituaries for the Week of March 10, 2004 Fern Flossie Arthur Hensiek Fern Flossie Arthur was born August 6, 1900, on the Arthur family farm, near Wesco, Missouri, the youngest of 12 children of Marshall Andrew Arthur and Gertrude Martha (McDole) Arthur, and she passed away peacefully on February 20, 2004, at Westminster, California in her 104th year. Fern lived on the Arthur family property where her parents farmed and her father traveled selling fruit trees for Stark Nursery. Fern's grandfather, John McDole, was one of the first forgemen at the Meramec Iron Works. One of her earliest memories was that of her mother and aunt returning home from the St. Louis 1904 World's Fair. In 1905 the family moved to Indian Territory, which later became Oklahoma. While there, several of the family members, including Fern, were stricken with typhoid fever from a contaminated well. Marshall Arthur, and Fern's brother Paul, died of typhoid, but Fern and her brother, Ralph, were nursed back to health by their mother. The remaining family moved back to Wesco in 1906. Fern's mother, Gertrude, died of tetanus in 1913, and Fern moved to St. Louis to live with her sisters, Olive Vaughn, and Lillie Arthur. In 1919 Fern married Walter Milbratz of St. Louis, who preceded her in death in 1938. No children were born of their union, and in 1939, Fern married William Thomas Hensiek of St. Louis. In 1942 Fern and Bill moved to Jonesburg, Missouri, and in 1943, their only child, Margaret, was born. Fern and Bill returned to St. Louis for a brief time before moving to the Warrenton area and buying a farm close to Price's Branch. Fern's husband, Bill, died in 1958, and Fern went to work for Beacon Shoe Co. in Jonesburg. Fern sold the farm and she and Margaret moved to Montgomery City where Fern lived until 1967 when she moved to Long Beach, California to be close to her daughter and grandchildren. Fern was preceded in death by nine brothers and two sisters, husbands Walter and Bill, and grandson, Scott Randall Miller. Fern is survived by daughter Margaret (Hensiek) Faux and husband, David of Cypress, California; grandson Brian Miller, wife Kristina, and great grandsons Scott and Michael of Lakewood, California; and niece, Martha (Beeler) Hensel and husband, George of Laguna Vista, Texas. Fern was a loving and gentile woman, who loved music, especially Lawrence Welk, cooking, gardening, and family. Fern's life spanned the twentieth century, and the lessons she taught by her example will remain and nurture those of us who loved and survived her. Burial was at Forest Lawn, Cypress, California on February 26, 2004. (Submitted by Margaret Faux)
