Ernestine Hendrickson and Martha Wilson were the singers accompanied by Mrs. Betty Erdman on the organ. Pallbearers were A.G. Shafer, Walter Barenberg, Boyce Warning, Carl Gunther, Mason Jones and Marvin Stienbeck. Interment was in the Benkelman Cemetery under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home. She was baptized at an early age in the United Methodist Church.Born in Henderson, Iowa, on January 12, 1906, to Conley and Rosa (Chapman) Ridlen, and she came to Nebraska with her parents as a young girl, settling around Imperial. It was there she met Guy Lester Slade and on November 2, 1922, they were united in marriage in Wauneta, Nebraska. To this union five children were born: Helen Bunning of Benkelman; Guy, Jr., of Wendell, Ida., and Leonard of Shoshone, Ida. Preceding her in death were her husband, Guy; two sons, Marion and Kenneth, and her parents.Others surviving her are two brothers: J. Pearl Ridlen of Holyoke, Colo., and Raymond Ridlen of Gallatin, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Clara Slade of Imperial, a brother-in-law, sister-in-law, 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Fern was a well-known resident in Dundy County, living in the Hiawatha community and Imperial before moving to a farm east of Benkelman with her husband and family, finally moving into Benkelman when they retired from farming. She worked at the Hester Memorial Home for seven years. She loved her work, but her health forced her to give this up. A week before her passing, she and her granddaughter Christina Slade had motored to Gallatin, Missouri to visit with her brother there, and on to Chillicothe to visit a friend and two nieces and their families. Upon her return home she went to Holyoke, Colo., to visit her brother there. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Source: The Benkelman, NE Post, September 1976
