Fern Ione Thompson Slagle was born February 21, 1917 at Montezuma, Iowa. Her parents were Walter Howard Thompson and Sylvia Tish Thompson. Fern received her education in the Montezuma School graduating from high school in the class of 1935. She was married to Glenn H. Slagle on January 4, 1938 in Lancaster, Missouri. They were the parents of four children, Theda, William, Robert and Linda. They lived south of Brooklyn before moving to Brooklyn 65 years ago. Fern was the manager of the lunch program at Brooklyn and BGM Schools for twenty-six years retiring in 1982. Mrs. Slagle was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, UMW, South Side Circle, American Quarter Horse Association, American Shetland Pony Club, Farm Bureau, and Brooklyn Historical Society. She was a volunteer work at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Her parents, a son William and a brother Harold Thompson preceded her in death. Surviving are her husband, Glenn; three children and their spouses, Theda and Bob May of Malcom, IA Robert and Pat Slagle of Malcom, IA and Linda and Roger Walz of Tama, IA; two brothers, Lester Thompson of Montezuma and Ray Thompson of New Sharon; ten grandchildren, Eugene May, Diane Foster, Jim May, Kim Morris, Dean Slagle, Michelle Walz, Don Slagle, Jennifer Walz, Scott Slagle, and Matthew Walz; four great grandchildren, Tyler Slagle, Lauren Slagle, Tanner Foster and Tucker Foster; and three step great grandchildren, Alana Grace, Aaron Grace and Ben Rae.
