She was employed in the dietary kitchen at Newman Hospital for many years before she retired in the mid-1980s. She was a volunteer for the Emporia Senior Center. Fern Margaret Burnett, the daughter of Otis Le Fon and Anna Maude Wiggins Burnett, was born Feb. 3, 1913, at Four Mile Community in Morris County. She married Arnold Lester Simmons on April 28, 1935, at Council Grove. He died Aug. 21, 1985, at Topeka. Mrs. Simmons was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, meeting with the Americus chapter. She also belonged to several card clubs and the Knitting Guild. She is survived by a son Donald Simmons of Americus; a daughter, Melba Herrick of McLean, Va.; two sisters, Mildred Schoof and Velva Blanton, both of Council Grove; a brother Leland Burnett of Overland Park; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Ross Burnett, Chester Burnett and Otis Burnett; and a sister, Wilma Metcalf, died earlier. -Emporia Gazette, Friday, January 19, 2001; p. 2
