Read More	POCAHONTAS - Fern Peterson, age 92, of Pocahontas, formerly of Havelock, passed away on Feb. 25, 2011, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at the Hope United Methodist Church in Havelock, with Rev. Clare DeBoef and Rev. Thorne Wittstruck officiating. Burial will be in Washington Cemetery near Havelock. -------------------------------------------------- Fern Rhea Peterson, age 92, of Pocahontas, formerly of Havelock, died Friday, February 25, 2011 at Pocahontas Community Hospital. Fern Peterson was born to Harold G. and Alice M. (Crouch) Brechler on September 23, 1918 on a farm near Curlew, Iowa. She attended school in Curlew and later in Lynd and Russell, Minnesota, graduating from Russell High School and Mankato Commercial College. She then moved to Fort Dodge where she worked for Sears Roebuck and Co. She married Norman “Shorty” Peterson on June 23, 1941. The couple lived in Texas and Arizona while Shorty was in the Army Air Corps, then moved to a farm north of Havelock, Iowa and began farming. Fern helped with the farming in many ways—doing chores, keeping chickens, operating machinery and keeping all the farm records. Fern was an active member of Havelock United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, serving as treasurer of the new church building fund, treasurer of UMW, and district treasurer of UMW. She was a 4-H leader, a member of Iowa Flying Farmers, Havelock Woman’s Club and Red Hat Ladies. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, cooking and baking. For twenty years, Fern and Shorty wintered in Arizona and made many friends there. They loved to travel, visiting 39 countries and flying their own plane to Central America and Alaska with the Iowa Flying Farmers. Shorty died in 2003 and Fern remained on the farm for several years and later moved to Arlington Place, where she enjoyed the company of friends and the good care. She is survived a daughter Roxy (John) Riessen of West Burlington, Iowa; a son Larry (Jean) Peterson of Pocahontas, Iowa; four grandchildren, Carrie Riessen, Jane (Jason) Riessen Landretti, Ryan (Amy) Peterson and Michael (Katie) Peterson; and four great-grandchildren—Dylan, Tyson, Jadyn and Colin Peterson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and sister, Velma Spanier.
