Read More	Ferne Jeanette Nordyke - Dean, 89 years and 8 months old, passed away in her home in Chico, California Saturday, December 25, 2004 of natural causes. Born to parents Earl Preston Nordyke and Mattie Beatrice Kennedy in Sites, Calif. (Colusa County), Ferne was the eldest of five children. In 1921, when she was six years old, her parents moved to Chico where she attended local schools. A 1934 graduate of Chico High School, she was the secretary of her home room from 1932 - 34, a member of the English and Booklovers clubs and Girls Student League. On August 7th, 1954, she married Howard Elbert Dean in Carson City, Nevada. They were married 46 years and 8 months when he died on May 18, 2001, still the loves of one another's lives. Ferne worked at Victors tube manufacturing plant and at Millers Market first sorting and packing eggs and then arranging displays. She was a gentle and loving homemaker for 70 years, past member of the Chico Riding Club, she loved her horse Cannonball whom she had raised from a foal. Besides riding in the Pioneer Day Parades, she most loved full-moon rides through Bidwell Park and up the Canyon. According to family and friends, she was the best cook in Chico. Talented with crochet and latch hook, she created afghans, shawls, hats, and doilies for many in her family. She loved reading and her roses. Mrs. Dean was preceded in death by her husband Howard; two brothers, Earl "Hayward" Nordyke and Curtis Alvin Nordyke; her only sister, Marjorie Celestine Commons. She is survived by one remaining brother, Norman Ray Nordyke and his wife Jo Ellen of Gold River; step-daughter, Carolyn Marie Payne and her husband Philip of Chico; step-granddaughter, Emily Payne Jones and her husband Keith of San Angelo, Texas; step-grandson, Thomas Adam Payne and his wife Debra of Glendale, Ariz.; two step-great-grandchildren, Khosi Miriah Jones and Ethan Dinnel Jones; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Handi Riders or Enloe Hospice in care of the Brusie Funeral Home. As per her request, there will be no service. Happy Trails.
