Description	:	Joseph Bird, son of Garrett and Rebecca Bird, was born in Indiana, June 5, 1841, and passed away February 4, 1927, at his present home where he has lived the past 55 years. He had reached the age of 85 years, 7 months, and 29 days. He had been in failing health for a number of years but had always borne his suffering with great patience, always thinking of others rather than himself. Read More	Joseph Bird, son of Garrett and Rebecca Bird, was born in Indiana, June 5, 1841, and passed away February 4, 1927, at his present home where he has lived the past 55 years. He had reached the age of 85 years, 7 months, and 29 days. He had been in failing health for a number of years but had always borne his suffering with great patience, always thinking of others rather than himself. His last illness was of short duration, he became suddenly worse Wednesday night and passed away Friday evening at 8 p.m. Although his suffering was intense he was conscious almost to the last. He called all of his family to his bedside and told them good-bye and that he was ready to go. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane Campbell, May 15, 1862. They have known the hardships of the pioneers of this county, having settled on the prairie when neighbors were scarce. Their home has long been known for its hospitality. Uncle Joe, as he was familiarly called by his acquaintances, was a man of clean personal habits and highly respected by all. There was nothing he enjoyed more than to be surrounded by his family; his devoted wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His home was blessed with four sons and four daughters, all living except two daughters, Mrs. Chas. Butterfield, who passed away April 4, 1925, and Stella Edith who died at the age of 8 months. All were present during his last illness. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, and children, John W. and Mrs. Sadie Brown of near Diagonal; Thomas E. of near Tingley; Albert W. and Fred J., of near Mount Ayr, and Miss Rachael at home. One sister, Mrs. Elijah Campbell of Mount Ayr, and two brothers, Harve of Palmyra, Neb., and Edd of Vonnie, Wyoming, 16 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon, February 7th, at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Guy J. Winslow, at the Diagonal Methodist church. Six grandsons - Bert and Glen Butterfield, Velmar Bird, Roy Brown, John and Otto Bird - were the pall bearers. The body was interred in the Knowlton cemetery. - contributed.
