Read More	Obituary - Mrs. Mary Jane Bird Mary Jane Campbell, daughter of John and Susan Campbell, was born in Indiana February 17, 1874 (sic) and passed away at her home east of Diagonal, February 20, 1928, at the advanced age of 81 years and three days. She came with her parents to Iowa when quite young and was united in marriage to Joseph Bird May 15, 1862, and with the exception of a few years spent in Nebraska and Missouri, their entire wedded life of more than 64 years was spent on the same farm where she passed away. Mrs. Bird and her husband experienced the real pioneer life as not many of the present day know it. No one entered her home without receiving a warm welcome, nor did anyone leave without feeling the warmth of her genuine hospitality, so characteristic of the people of her ancestry. With her disease did not destroy the charm of a kind and indulgent disposition, nor old age diminish her solicitude for her friends and loved ones. While she continued to enjoy the society of her friends and children she has for many years realized her real active life was over and with resignation awaited the divine call. Since the death of her devoted companion a little over a year ago, she has been in declining health, but able to be about the household duties until one week before her death. The love of a mother for her children passeth understanding. Business cares and their own home circles have encroached upon their time and may have robbed mother of their companionship, but she was ever just the same; rejoicing at their success and grieving at their misfortunes. We know that years hence the memories of her unselfish devotion will make them better men and women and may her precepts be their guiding star. Mrs. Bird was converted and baptized at the age of 14 and has lived a true christian life through all these years. Eight children had been born to this union. Mrs. Rebecca Butterfield passed away April 4, 1925, and Stella Bird in infancy. Those of the immediate family, who survive her are: John W. of Diagonal, and Thos. E. of Tingley; Mrs. Sadie Brown and Miss Rachel Bird of Diagonal and Albert W. and Fred J. of Mount Ayr. All were present and helped care for their mother during her last illness. She also leaves sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Parr and Mrs. Rebecca Powell, of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Caroline Askren of Diagonal, besides a host of other relatives and friends. "Smooth the locks of one so fair, On our mother's brow with tenderest care, Gather the robes in final fold, Around the form so still and cold; Lay on her bosom, pure as snow; The fairest, sweetest flowers that grow Kiss and leave her, our hearts' delight; Her pain is over, mother sleeps tonight." Funeral services were held at Diagonal on Wednesday, February 22, 1928, at 2:00 P.M. at the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. Guy J. Winslow and the remains were laid to rest in the Knowlton cemetery by the side of her husband. The same grandsons who acted as pall bearers for the grandfather a year ago, also acted as pall bearers for their grandmothers.
