Description	:	Flora May (Voedisch) Doran was born in O'Neill, Neb., Aug. 19, 1901, to German immigrants Edward and Flora (Davis)Voedisch. She attended school for one year in O'Neill. In 1909, her family moved to a ranch four miles north of Dewey. S.D., which belonged to Arthur Cook. for one year. In May 1910, her parents homesteaded on land four miles east of Dewey. She attended school for one year in O'Neill. In 1909, her family moved to a ranch four miles north of Dewey. S.D., which belonged to Arthur Cook. for one year. In May 1910, her parents homesteaded on land four miles east of Dewey. When Flo was about 10 years old, she started raising Hereford cattle. She attended 10 years of school in Dewey, which included two years of high school. Flo and her brother, Fred, played for dances in the Dewey area for many years. Flo married Thomas Doran of Custer, SD, June 16, 1927, and moved to his homestead ranch three and one half miles southeast of Dewey. The Doran's raised Hereford cattle, sheep and chickens and had a large garden. They did most of their trading at the Burdock store, which also served as a post office in the early years. Flo endured a lot of sorrow. In July 1942, Flo's father died and on Jan. 25, 1943, she lost her husband after a brief illness. Her mother died in July of l1943. Flo continued to operate the ranch by herself. In later years she bought her hay and did most of the work herself. However, she did hire some extra help to fix the fences. For nearly 90 years, Flo lived without electricity, using kerosene lanterns, and without running water, using a cistern from which she drew her water with a pail, not a pump. She considered Edgemont, SD here town, since she traded there after the Burdock store closed in the early' 60's. In February 1998, she moved to Cactus Hills Assisted Living Center in Edgemont, where she enjoyed living in this new environment. In October 2000 she moved to Colonial Manor in Custer. On Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2001, Flo died. She was 99 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister, Edith Cook; and on brother, Fred Voedisch. Survivors include numerous nephews and nieces, including Gene (Marie) Demmon of Mills, Wyo., Lloyd (Beverly) Putnam of rural Edgemont, Helen Tolman of Wheatridge, Colo., the late Donald (Lois) Putnam of Oelrichs, SD, Arthur Cook of Varille, Calif., Robert Voedisch of San Mateo, Calif.; numerous great-nephews and nieces including John Putnam of Dewey, George Putnam of LaCross, Wis., Cindy Putnam of Hermosa, SD, Opal Holsworth of Interior, SD, Cora (Doug) Petersen of Parade, SD, Joann (Mark) Boggs of Edgemont, Verdale Metzger from Ohio; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service were held Feb. 20 at the United Church in Edgemont with the Rev. Marion Gray officiating. Music was provided by J.C. and Darlene Bastian performing "Amazing Grace" and "Simple Gifts". Burial was in the family plot in Custer next to her husband, Tommy, and her parents.
