Description	:	Florence Mouw March 9, 1896 - February 13, 1995 Florence Mouw, 98, of Sioux Center, who lived all of life in Sioux Center except for a brief time at Fort Dodge during World War I, died Monday, February 13, at Sioux Center. She and her family played prominent roles in the development of Stoux Center. Read More	Florence Mouw March 9, 1896 - February 13, 1995 Florence Mouw, 98, of Sioux Center, who lived all of life in Sioux Center except for a brief time at Fort Dodge during World War I, died Monday, February 13, at Sioux Center. She and her family played prominent roles in the development of Stoux Center. Her parents, Nicholas and Clara Balkema were the proprietors of a large general store, which was located at the north corner of the business section eventually razed when Centre Mall was built. Her husband, Peter B. Mouw, was the president of First National Bank as was her son, Vernon Mouw. Florence Mouw wrote in her diaries every night, a policy she began when she was In high school and which she faithfully continued all of her adult life only until a few years ago. The diaries, said family members, are voluminous and provide an interesting, humorous and descriptive view of hot only her life and attitudes but also of Sioux Center Itself. Family members say the diaries are "as funny as can be." One of the entries tells about how she had been called into the principal's office when she was in high school. The principal believed she was flirting too much with the boys, and she describes how the matter was all straightened out. She was active in Central Reformed Church and women's organizations of that congregation. She was treasurer of the Women's Missionary Society for many years. There was logic to her having that position, explained her son. Vernon Mouw: "She could take the money home and Dad could take it to the bank." She was completely happy In Sioux Center, her son said. "Dad was more active in community events, and she stayed home. But she was active in church and especially In the American Legion Auxillary, In which she was a charter member and a life member. She provided a good home. She was a supportive type of person, especially for Dad and us kids. Both of his parents loved gardening, said Vernon Mouw. His mother, for example, often took flowers to church for Sunday worship services. She had a big fruit orchard, big rose garden and many tulips. Memorial services were at Central Reformed Church In Sioux Center on Thursday, at which she was described by the officiating pastor, the Rev. Harold tenters, as a praying woman who was greatly interested in young people and helping others. Irv Mouw sang "My Jesus I Love Thee" and "Precious Memories." The congregation sang "Amazing Grace." Organist was Minerva Bomgaars. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Casket bearers were Roger Bell, Michael Bell, Gregory Mouw, Kenneth Van Roekel, Jay Hulst and Troy Delp. She was born on March 9, 1896, the daughter of Nicholas and Clara (Van Rooyen) Balkema. On July 30, 1918, she married Peter B. Mouw In Camp Dodge In Des Moines. He died on May 21, 1980. Mrs. Mouw was a resident of the nursing wing at the hospital since 1990. Survivors include a son, Vernon Mouw, and his wife, Marie, of Sioux Center; two daughters. Muriel and husband Glen Bell of Storm Lake and Eva Hulst of Le Mars; a sister. Lucille and husband Eardly Schuetz of Lincoln,Nebraska; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and six greatgreat- grandchildren. She was preceded In death by two sisters and three brothers.
