Mrs. Den Beste, nee Kate Balkema, was born at Newkirk, Iowa September 27, 1887, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Balkema. She was married to Fred Den Beste on September 25, 1907, and the couple made their home in Sioux Center until three years ago, when they moved to Orange City They had operated a drygood store here for many years prior to retiring in 1955. Survivors include her husband, two daughters Gwen (Mrs. Kenneth Van Wechel) of Orange City and Esther (Mrs. Ronald Wiese) of Manson; nine grandchildren, four great grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Peter B. (Florence) Mouw, of Sioux Center and Mrs. Eardley (Lucille) Shuetz of Lincoln, Nebr.; two brothers, Raymond Balkema of Burlington and Clayton Balkema of Cherokee. She was preceded in death by: her parents, two daughters, Alice and Mildred, sister, Janet (Mrs. Wm. G. Van Roekel) and a brother, Dr. Walter S. Balkema. Sioux Center News 1965-03-04.
