Description	:	FLORENCE O. NELSEN was born April 12, 1914, at Lyons, Nebraska, to Hugh and Jessie (Shawver) Gallup of rural Lyons. She passed away Friday, February 22, 2008, at her apartment at Maple Ridge Retirement Community in Omaha, Nebraska, after eight years of fairly good health. NELSEN was born April 12, 1914, at Lyons, Nebraska, to Hugh and Jessie (Shawver) Gallup of rural Lyons. She passed away Friday, February 22, 2008, at her apartment at Maple Ridge Retirement Community in Omaha, Nebraska, after eight years of fairly good health. She was a life-long resident of Burt County. Florence graduated from Blackbird High School in 1931. A couple months later, June 10, 1931, Florence and Clarence N. Nelsen were married in the Presbyterian Parsonage in Lyons. Florence and Clarence had four children: Norman, Larry, Sharon and Rodney Kent, who died of polio in 1952. They moved from the farming community to Lyons and Clarence pursued custom corn-shelling as a vocation. Florence cleaned houses and hung wallpaper for many families in and around Lyons. She also worked a couple years during the summer at Ireland's Drug Store. Clarence and Florence wintered in Phoenix from 1961 to 1988. Clarence passed away on January 20, 1988. Florence had a life-long interest in photography and filled many scrapbooks. She had many hobbies; the most notable being her iris gardens with other flowers filling in the months before and after the May blooming. She grew a couple hundred named varieties and enjoyed working in her garden, as well as, a vegetable garden. She knitted, crocheted and was a good seamstress, making many quilts. She inherited a loom and made 5,000 rugs in 23 years. In her later years, she volunteered (204 1/2 hours) at the Logan Valley Manor, doing mending and sewing for the residents. She enjoyed going to dances, dancing to some famous bands, like Lawrence Welk. Florence was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lyons, where she taught Sunday school and served as superintendent for a number of years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and attended meetings with her sister, Edna Frey. She was active in a number of church, neighborhood and flower clubs and enjoyed seeing other folks' gardens too. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Clarence; son: Rodney Kent; older siblings: Edna (Gallup) Frey, Paul Gallup; younger sister: Gladys (Gallup) King and half-brother: George Bacon. Survivors include her sons: Norman Nelsen of Omaha, Larry (Joyce) Nelsen of Missoula, Montana; daughter: Sharon (Don) Pack of Ponca, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren: sisters: Tamsey Gatewood, Waneta Frey and Blanche Guill all of Lyons; brother: Howard (Phyllis) Bacon of New York; many nephews; nieces and cousins. FUNERAL SERVICE: Tuesday, February 26, 2008, 10:30 a.m., First Presbyterian Church, Lyons, NE VISITATION: Monday, February 25, 2008, 6 - 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends at Pelan Funeral Home in Lyons. Visitation will also be held Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the service. BURIAL: Lyons Cemetery, Lyons, NE MEMORIALS: First Presbyterian Church, Lyons, NE.
