Orangeville Sun, September 23, 1897, page 3 Sad Fatality - A Little Girl Meets a Horrible Death - Her Parents Only a Short Distance Away Sad indeed was the death of little five-year-old Pearl Speers, daughter of Mr. Wm. Speers of the 3rd line, Caledon. On Monday morning at half-past eleven o'clock Mrs. Speers was engaged in getting dinner, and consequently had built a hot fire. She went out to the barn to get some eggs leaving Pearl and her two little brothers alone in the kitchen. When the mother disappeared the girl, it is supposed, began poking the fire and in this way set fire to her clothing. Mr. Speers, who was working in a field not far from the house heard screams, but paid little attention thinking the children were playing. Suddenly he was horrified to see Pearl running madly about the door yard enveloped in flames. He hurried to her and managed to extinguish the flames, but not before the unfortunate child was burned beyond hope of recovery. Dr. McFayden was called and did what he could to relieve the little sufferer who passed away at midnight after hours of intense suffering. The child was frightfully burned. Her body being literally roasted, and her eyelashes, eyebrows and hair being burned. The children who were in the house when the affair occurred are too young to give any information as to how her clothing ignited. The remains were buried in St. John's burying ground yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Speers have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
