Schuster, age 90, of Watertown, SD, formerly of Eden, SD, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Monday, November 13, 2017 after her cancer took over the majority of her organs. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 17, 2017 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Paul Rutten as celebrant. Music will be furnished by the Immaculate Conception Funeral Choir accompanied by Danielle Holmquist-Holida. Florentina Marie Schuster was born on September 16, 1927 to Teresa (Orslan) and Frank Deutsch in Eden, South Dakota. Flo grew up on the family farm near Eden and attended country and township Schools through the 8th grade. She concluded her education with two years of high school at the town school. She was unable to attend her remaining high school years as they were only offered in Webster, SD and the family had no money to continue her education. At the age of 14, she was given a ride (from a complete stranger) to Webster, a town she had never been to before to search for a job to help support her family. She worked at Mejeske Cafe' for six years making $7.00 a week and then worked at Bain's Cafe'. She had to pay $2.00 for rent and a quarter to attend church every Sunday. She was so happy that bowling was free as that was her entertainment several nights a week. Florentina Deutsch and Robert Schuster were united in marriage on June 1, 1948. Together they built a three story home on a farm located four miles Northwest of Eden where they raised their family. After her marriage, Flo was employed by Dakotah Quilting for many years and the Blue Denim Bar & Cafe' where she was well known for the "Bullhead Feed". She was also well known for raising/butchering chickens, milking the only cow to support her family and a garden that would yield enough vegetables to keep the entire family fed until the next year's harvest. She also helped on the farm with the planting, harvest season, making haystacks and hand picking rocks. This was a job that never ended and her family still laughs about it as Flo always felt that someone was dumping rocks on their land. Flo also loved to keep the flower beds around her home full of color and life. Flo enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards and casino games, cooking, baking and watching her grandchildren enjoy all the goodies she made. A day never went by where there was not fresh, homemade bread, cookies or pie in their home. Her life and actions were dedicated to those she loved and she never took a moment for herself. On February 22, 1992 Flo moved to Watertown where she worked at Country Kitchen and the Watertown Public Schools as a Foster Grandparent/teacher's aide. She was active in her church group both in Eden and Watertown. Grateful for having shared in Florentina's life are six children, Donnie (Arla) Schuster and Larry Schuster of Eden, Gloria Kurkowski of Grenville, Bev Dolney of Watertown, Evonne (Joe) Lesnar of Grenville and Corinne (John) Mahlen of Watertown; 24 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and her best friend and caregiver, Joe Pederson. She is preceded in death by her parents, her ex-husband, two sisters, Helma (Herbert) Unger and Eleanor (Florence) Jaspers, four brothers, Clarence, Eddie, Wilfred and Delbert, and her son-in-law, Gene Kurkowski. - Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel
