There will be a wake service at the church 8 p.m. Wednesday with visitation beginning at 4 p.m. Florian John Lunders, son of Mary (Bies) and Jacob H. Lunders, was born northeast of Salem on July 18, 1916. At age 3, he moved with his family to a farm three miles west of Hoven. He attended St. Anthony's Parochial School through eighth grade. Following his schooling, he worked on his parents' farm. At age 18, he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and worked at Camp Pactola. From 1935-38 he worked in Minnesota. In 1938, Florian moved to Pierre, where he was employed as a hired hand at the St. Anthony's Hospital farm. He married Marie Katherine Abernathy on Aug. 21, 1941, at Pierre. In 1942, they moved to Portland, Ore., where Florian worked as a marine steam pipe fitter at the Oregon shipyard. In March 1944 they moved to Hoven where he worked as a farmhand and in 1945 they farmed on their own one mile west of Hoven. In 1946 they moved to a farm seven miles northwest of Hoven. In October 1955 they moved into Hoven where Florian operated a cream buying station. He worked for the Blue Valley Dairy from 1961-64 and in 1965 sold insurance for the Catholic Order of Foresters. In 1966-67 he managed the Hoven Municipal Liquor Store and then had an auction sale and moved to California. Later they moved to Lead where he worked for Montgomery Wards. In 1969 they returned to Hoven where Florian took a position at Meyer's Sales and Service. In 1971 he was employed at the Hoven Equity Exchange. He suffered a heart attack in 1973, which prompted his retirement. Since Dec. 30, 2003, Florian had stayed at the Holy Infant Hospital. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed playing cards and at one time was a geese and duck hunter, fisherman and golfer. Florian is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years Marie of Hoven; four daughters, Rosalie K. Vogel and her husband Richard of Onaka, Lexie Sack and her husband Frank of Fort Pierre, Marjorie Colburn and her husband Robert of Ocoee, Fla., and Rebecca Denny and her husband Myron of Battle Ground, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers (Mark, James, and Arnold), five sisters (Angela Meyer, Lucille Schmidt, Roseann Larson, Imelda Weinzapfel, and Rosemary Lunders), and two grandsons. Casketbearers will be Kenny Vogel and Kevin Vogel of Onaka, Kurt Vogel and Jason Buechler of Aberdeen, Kris Vogel of Denver, Colo., and Frank Sack Jr. of Fort Pierre.
