Grandpa Florian emigrated to America in 1906 at the age of 28. He met my Grandmother, Frances Wilma Malota, in New York. They had both known each other in Zlin, but he was 10 years older, so they did not have much in common until meeting in New York. My Grandfather asked Frances to marry him after he made his "fortune". He traveled to Kansas to a relative whose name we do not know, and he worked with him as a Meat Cutter. He then heard of a meat market for sale in Iowa. He sent for Frances, they were married in Chelsea, Iowa in about 1915. He owned and ran the meat market in Elberon, Iowa in Tama County until he retired in his 80's. He died in 1974 at the age of 96. Florian and Frances had Marie Machan in 1917, Leo Joseph Machan in 1919, my father Francis Emil Machan in 1921, and Leonard Charles Machan in 1924. We don't know the names of Florian's parents in the Zlin-Olomouc area, but my research seems to indicate that Josef and Alzbeta had a son named Joseph on April 10, 1840 and a daughter Marie in 1844, Vaclav in 1852, and Jan in 1854. I think my Great-grandfather was Joseph who married Theresia. They had a son Adolf born in 1874 (and died in infancy), a daughter named Emilia on June 7, 1871. That's as far as I could get with birth records, but because my Grandfather used "Joseph" and "Emil" (male version of Emilia) as middle names for his sons, and named his daughter Marie (possibly because she was a favorite Aunt?) it seems logical that he was descended from that branch of the family. - Sherry (Machan) D'Attile - Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning, October 23, at the Immaculate Conception church at Clutier by Rev. F J. Ruzicka for Florian Machan, 96, who died at the Sunrise Hill Care center at Traer Sunday morning, October 20, 1974, where he had been residing since August of 1973. Casket bearers were Robert Raftis, Lanny Nowotny, Albin Husak, Robert Valenta, Roy Homire, and Ronald Kaloupek. Interment was at Holy Trinity cemetery near Vining. Florian Machan was born in Zlin, Czechoslovakia on May 4, 1878 to John and Mary Machan . After completing eighth grade, he became a butcher's apprentice in Prague. He emigrated to the United States in 1906. He worked for a time in New York, Pennsylvania and Kansas. In January of 1911, he came to Chelsea where he worked for the railroad. In 1913 he married Frances Malota at St. Joseph's church in Chelsea. They lived in Chelsea until 1924, when they purchased the meat market in Elberon. Mrs. Machan died in 1947, but "Butch " as he was known, continued in business until he retired at the age of 77. In 1960, he moved to the home of his daughter and family in Clutier where he lived until he entered the care center. He is survived by his daughter Marie, (Richard) Nowotny and three sons, Leo and Leonard of Elberon, and Francis of Van Nuys California. All three served in the armed forces; Leo, 30 years in the U. S. Army; Leonard , 20 years in the U.S. Army ; and Francis in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
