Mr. Marchant was born in Aladdin, Wyo., the son of James and Olga Marchant. He graduated from Belle Fourche High School with the class of 1927 and married Helen Wescott in 1935. He worked for Belle Fourche Implement Co., serving as parts foreman for 10 years. He moved to Spearfish in 1945, and in partnership with the Belle Fourche firm, opened Spearfish Implement Co., managing the store until it was closed in 1965. He was active with the Chamber of Commerce. He was involved with the startup and development of the Dorsett facilities and ground was first broken for them in 1954 while he was Chamber president. He served on the Board of Directors of the South Dakota Hospital and Homes Association, the parent company of the complex. After closing his store, he became plant engineer for North Central Health Services, a successive manager of the Dorsett complex, serving for 12 years. Mr. and Mrs. Marchant later became residents at one of the Dorsett townhomes. He was active at the Spearfish United Methodist Church and the Snappers Club, and after full retirement in 1980, he volunteered for senior transportation services and other tasks through the RSVP program. He also served six years on the Spearfish School Board, including a term as president. Mr. Marchant moved from Spearfish to Orange County, Calif., in 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1990. He is survived by two sons, Harold of Walnut Creek, Calif., and James of Placentia; five granddaughters, one great-grandson and one great-grandaughter.
