Mr. Gaines died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1993, at his home. He was born Oct. 19, 1923, in the Richland community in southwest Douglas County, the son of William Arthur and Myrtle Lovina McKenzie Gaines. A lifelong resident of the Richland/Twin Mound area, Mr. Gaines was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of the Douglas County Fair Board, the Clinton Land Owners Assn., the Douglas County Livestock Assn., the National Rifle Assn., Clinton Presbyterian Church, the Topeka Consistory of the Scottish Rite bodies, Arab Shrine Temple of Topeka, the Wakarusa Watershed Board and the Clinton Historical Society. He also was a beef leader for 4-H, county deputy for the Twin Mound Grange, director of the Twin Mound Cemetery Board, a life member of the American Hereford Assn. and a past member and current trustee of the Albert Neese Lodge 248 AF&AM. Mr. Gaines married Lois Maxine Downing on Nov. 18, 1950, at Horton. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Jon William and Tom E., both of Overbrook; three daughters, Linda Faust, Overbrook, Saundra Hiller, Enid, Okla., and Diana Skinner, Lawrence; two sisters, Mary Graeff, San Diego, Leona Grayson, Bogart, Ga.; and 10 grandchildren.
