He was born Jan. 28, 1887 at Stockport, the son of Richard and Anne Miller Johnston. He was married to Lola Barnes Nov. 13, 1907. Surviving are his widow, who now makes her home in Carroll; one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Land, Carroll; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters: Mrs. Maude Smith, Stockport; Mrs. Cleola Miller, Iowa City; and Mrs. Aletha Burke, Keokuk. Johnston was a real estate agent. He served as secretary of the Stockport School District for many years and was active in the Republican Party. He was a past master and the last living charter member of Workman Lodge No. 634 AF&AM. He was a charter member and past patron of Stockport Chapter 544, Order of Eastern Star. He was preceded in death by three infant children and two brothers. Source: Van Buren Co.
