Father of Evea Jane & Joyce. Forrest Applegate, son of Arthur and Frances Applegate, was born March 21, 1892, at the homestead in the Cheyenne Community northeast of Luray, Kansas. He was the fifth child of a family of twelve. He died as a result of a tractor accident on July 1, 1978 at the age of 86 years, 3 months, and 10 days. On September 11, 1920, he was married to Faye Spoon at Salina, Kansas, and to this union two daughters were born. He was proceeded in death by his parents, five brothers, Arthur, Frank, Dail, John and Paul; and three sisters, Hannah, Fannie and Carol. Forrest and Faye Applegate lived on the family homestead, which he purchased, until 1949, when they moved to a farm just north of Luray. He raised wheat and cattle, and always wanted both to be the best that he could make them. He was presented the County Conservation Award a few years ago. When he was younger, he maintained a herd of quality Hereford cows, and in later years he always tried to purchase the best calves that he could find to put in his feedlot. He gradually farmed less but could not quit completely. He had just finished harvesting his wheat, had a pen of fat cattle ready to sell, and was getting ready to cultivate his milo. Mr. Applegate attended Fort Hays Normal School and was a teacher in Osborne County. A veteran of World War I he served as a mechanic in the Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion Rouner Post No. 309 and received his 50-year pin in 1970. As a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 198, Lucas, he received his 50-year pin in 1971. He was also a member of the Salina Isis Shrine. His faith in God was steadfast and sure, and he faithfully attended and supported the Cheyenne United Methodist Church, as well as many other community projects. He was interested in what his children and grandchildren were doing and was always encouraging them in one way or another. He was also interested in what other young people were doing, including Hernan Alfaro from Chile, who had become a part of the family. Services were held in the Cheyenne United Methodist Church Wednesday morning July 5, 1978, with Rev. Claude McMinn in charge.
