Born Nov. 1, 1937, in Bobtown, PA, Foster was the son of the late Reginald Paul George Sr. and Agnes Teresa (Holtschneider) George. Foster was preceded in death by his brothers, Reginald Paul George, Jr., and Lawrence Wilbur George; sister, Ruth LaVerne Mathews; son, Bryan Paul; and granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth. Foster is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Helen Marie (Heavner) George; along with six sons, Craig (Jody), Nokesville, Va, Kevin (Holly), Mount Airy, Michael, Cumberland, Mark (Julie), Dale City, Va., David (Robin), Akron, Ohio, and Darin (Rachael), Uniontown, Ohio; along with 18 grandchildren, Brittani, Jeremy, Lucas, Laurel, Christopher, Devin, Nathan, Gabriel, Michaela, Joshua, Rebekah, Timothy, Tyler, Colby, Erin, Autumn, Austin, Alyson; and 3 great grandchildren, Liam, Beckham, Hayden, and two on the way; his sister, Rita Luther, Clifton Forge, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graduate of Fort Hill High School, Class of 1955, Foster retired from the Kelly Springfield Tire Company with tenure of over 30 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains parish community where he celebrated his faith attending services at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church. He volunteered his time as a member and President of the Youth Recreational League of St. Patrick's School where he assisted in football, basketball, track, bowling, and other school-sponsored activities and events. Foster was lovingly devoted to his family and raised them to be self-sufficient. Whether instructing his children during his Saturday morning gardening or auto repair efforts or travelling distances to help on a home project, he continually gave his time, energy, and love to his family. His love of nature was passed onto his sons as he woke them for their next hunting or fishing adventure and always had stories as to how he bagged his latest game or lost the county record catch. His love of sports, especially baseball, was instilled into his children at an early age as well as his affinity for the card game, Setback. As his family grew, he welcomed each new grandchild in the hospital room with a smile as wide as the proud father's. Foster enjoyed his leisure time listening to and watching the Pittsburgh Pirates, much like his father, Reginald. He especially enjoyed holidays and built traditions the family will forever cherish. His mammoth Easter egg hunts and Christmas Eve present exchanges were annual events the whole family looked forward to. Every year he spent many hours tending his garden, growing vegetables and sharing them with family and friends. He enjoyed golf tremendously, especially with his golf buddies, Norm, George, Dave, and Earl. His love of bowling was shared with his wife, Helen, attending and managing the weekly scores and schedules of the league. As well, mini-retreats to their favorite entertainment destination, Wheeling Island in Wheeling, W.Va., were frequently in order. Foster showed the same devotion to the Cumberland community. He was a member of the Western Maryland chapter of the international JCI-USA youth organization with whom he served as Vice President and Secretary and, eventually, on the Board of Directors. He participated in year-round events and projects in its local branch of the Jaycees, including the Jaycee Seafood Festival at the Allegany County Fairgrounds that he was instrumental in developing and maintaining. Taking this commitment to an extraordinary level, he committed 18 years as manager of the Cumberland Hot Stove League Jaycees baseball team as he coached all of his sons as they became age eligible. He received the Earl Nonnemann Lifetime Achievement award by the league for his dedicated commitment and service to the youth of Western Maryland. Foster was a devoted member of Cumberland Lodge 63 Benevolent & Protective Order of The Elks for 32 years where he received numerous awards including 'Elk of The Year' and Youth Activities yearly awards. Also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Foster was involved in numerous charitable projects to help the local community. His generosity continued with membership in the Cumberland Outdoor Club where he assisted in many youth activities, including the fishing rodeo for handicapped children, contributions to their hunting and fishing committees, and many others. Foster's devotion to the youth of Cumberland extended to conceiving, planning, and developing the land now denoted as the Jaycee Recreational Area in the city's north-end. He convinced city and county authorities to assist monetarily and approve the land redevelopment for the installation of a ball field and recreational equipment to serve the needs of youth in the area. It became the home field for his Jaycee baseball team and a second home for his children. His persistence led him to serve on the City of Cumberland Recreational Advisory Board where he was involved in many improvements including the revitalization of Constitution Park and South Cumberland Riverside youth fields. His work was recognized statewide and led to his nomination as Cumberland's Outstanding Young Man of the Year award with a ceremony celebrated in Baltimore, MD. Allegany Community College recognized his dedication, commitment, and support of educational enrichment by honoring the George family during graduation ceremonies celebrating the honor. A special thank you to Western Maryland Health System and their Medical and Hospice services which provided exceptional care and support during his final days. Family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, at Adams Family Funeral Home, PA, 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com). Mass of the Christian Burial will be held to celebrate Foster's life on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland, at 11a.m. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be sons, Craig, Kevin, Michael, Mark, David, and Darin. Memorial donations may be sent to the Cumberland Hot Stove Baseball League and Allegany College of Maryland.
