If it had not been for my mother and Washington, my childhood would have been commonplace. My mother differed radically from the rest of the mothers in the little Iowa town where I was born. She came from the east . . . Her Eastern accent, her liberal views and above all, the link which she made great, beautiful Washington, my dream city, would have been enough to set her apart from all others. But she had other characteristics which made her the dominating force in my early life. She was large and capable, able to do well anything she undertook, but preferring always the big things. She was a most excellent cook, but detested such phases of housekeeping as dusting and dishwashing — which early fell to our share. In bringing up her children — three girls and a boy — she insisted upon instant and absolute obedience, which I failed to appreciate then, but for which I have since been glad. She did not rule with an iron hand, however. We were allowed to do what we pleased to a larger extent than most children were, and consequently we had more occasion to use our judgment… She was often jolly and fascinating, however, and so attractive to look at, with her fair hair, gray eyes and charming expression, that I rather pitied the other girls whose mothers were so much less interesting. She played the piano exceedingly well, too and it was from hearing her that I came to love so much the best of music. I did not realize as a child, however, how really remarkable she was. Always a great reader, she was interested not only in the latest fiction and in the magazines and newspapers, but also in the most substantial literature. Her convictions were decided and her executive power unusual and consequently she has always been a leader . . .
