Read More	PIONEER RESIDENT IS LAID TO REST Mrs. Frances Dearborn Passes Away At Age of 90 Years; Had Resided Here Since 1883 Death has removed another pioneer of Hand County, in the person of Mrs. F. B. Dearborn, who passed away Sunday evening at the age of 90 years. Mrs. Dearborn, or "Grandma," as she was better known, was one of the most highly respected residents of Miller, where she had made her home for a quarter of a century. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Services were in charge of Rev. Andrews, and burial was made in the G. A. R. cemetery. Mrs. Frances Dearborn was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, on April 8th, 1844, the daughter of Noah Smith and Catherine Cook Smith, descendants of the Captain John Smith settlement. On her tenth birthday her father's family traveled to a place in Virginia where they took the new railroad, and were able to come on it to Rock Island, Illinois, taking a ferry boat across the Mississippi to Davenport, as there was not a bridge on the Mississippi at that early date. The combined trip took twenty-seven days. The next year, her father's family came on up to DeWitt, in Clinton county, Iowa, where he and three brothers took homesteads. There, on September 18th, 1861, she was married to Bradley Dearborn, who was almost immediately mustered into the Union Army. While stationed at Davenport guarding the Indians, following the Spirit Lake Massacre, he contracted a stomach disorder which made him an invalid all his life. Mr. Dearborn's uncle, Josiah Dearborn, had been before that in charge of Fort Dearborn, in Chicago. In 1883, Mr. and Mrs. Dearborn, and their two children came with other settlers to Hand County; living a year in Miller, where Mr. Dearborn built a number of houses, and then settling on a homestead in Pleasant Valley township. Mrs. Dearborn there, saw the extreme hardships of those early pioneers in that the heavy rainfall and luxuriant vegetation of the Eighties, when anything planted in the broken prairie would grow, was followed by the droughts and prairie fires of the Nineties, but she said that these vicissitudes were compensated for by the close friendships; and many matured men and women remember now this old lady's kindness to them, as children. After spending a few years with her daughter, Mamie Barber, in Oregon, she and Mr. Dearborn returned to Miller, where he built the little cottage that she has occupied in east Miller for almost twenty-five years. Mr. Dearborn passed away in 1914. Mrs. Dearborn leaves to mourn her loss, her daughter, Mamie Barber, of Hillsboro, Oregon, and her grandson, Ray F. Dearborn, and her granddaughter, Mrs. Vera Collier of Holabird, and her daughter-in-law. Mrs. O. W. Dearborn, besides grand children in Oregon, her great grand children here, and a host of friends who testify to her patience, and her determination, even after almost total deafness and later blindness came, to be of least care and trouble to others.
