Description	:	Frances Bartak Marshall was born in Sestroun, Selcany, Czechoslovakia, November 25, 1864. She was the eldest child of John and Mary Bartak. With three years old, she came to America with her parents. The family settled on a homestead in Iowa. Four years later, they went to Chicago, Ill. Here Frances attended school. She witnessed the great Chicago fire in 1872. In the spring of 1875, the family moved to Pocohantas county in Iowa. Read More	Frances Bartak Marshall was born in Sestroun, Selcany, Czechoslovakia, November 25, 1864. She was the eldest child of John and Mary Bartak. With three years old, she came to America with her parents. The family settled on a homestead in Iowa. Four years later, they went to Chicago, Ill. Here Frances attended school. She witnessed the great Chicago fire in 1872. In the spring of 1875, the family moved to Pocohantas county in Iowa. The Bartaks came to Sioux City with other emigrants and crossed into Nebraska in 1880, settling on a farm eight miles west of Verdigre. Here Frances grew to womanhood. For a time, she was employed by the Indian Department of the U.S. Government in the school for girls at the Santee Reservation. On Dec. 31, 1882, she was married to Louis Marshall. The couple settled in the Pischelville community, where they lived for 17 years. In 1899, the Marshall's purchased a farm in the Stony Butte area. Here they lived for 36 years. In 1935, they retired from active work, moving into Verdigre. On Jan. 14, 1949, Mr. Marshall passed away. Mrs. Marshall passed to the great beyond at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 10 days, Saturday, March 5, 1949. Surviving are three daughters and four sons; Angie ( Charles) Pavlik of Verdigre; Steffie (Anton) Juracek of Snyder, Oklal; Lucy (George) Barta of Lynch; Edward and Louis O. of Verdigre, George and Fred of Walnut. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; one brother, L.J. Bartak of Verdigre and a host of other relatives and friend. A son, Benjamin, preceded his mother in death. Funeral rites were held Wednesday last week at the ZCBJ Hall here.
