Interment was in the Jelen cemetery. Louis Marshall was born, January 1, 1861 in the village of Kryvoklat, Czechoslovakia, being the fourth child of Ignatz and Christina Marshall. Interment was in the Jelen cemetery. Louis Marshall was born, January 1, 1861 in the village of Kryvoklat, Czechoslovakia, being the fourth child of Ignatz and Christina Marshall. When he was five years old,in 1886, the family came to America and settled in Chicago, Ill. The senior Mr. Marshall, being musically inclined, encouraged his sons to develop musical appreciation. At the age of six, Luis was learning to master the violin. For a number of years, the Marshall family orchestra played at Chicago theaters, weddings and celebrations. In 1872, when Louis had attained his 11th birthday, the Marshall family came to Nebraska by way of Sioux City to Niobrara, where a land office was located. The family homesteaded 12 miles west of Niobrara, south of the Niobrara River, what is now known as Pischeville. Here Louis attended a frontier school. On December 31, 1881 at the age of 22 years, Mr. Marshall married Francis Bartak. The couple lived on the family homestead for 17 years. Here seven of their nine children were born. In 1899, Mr. Marshall purchased a farm in the Stony Butte community, 14 miles northwest of Verdigre, where he and his wife spent 36 years and where two children were born. Mr. Marshall, ever civil minded, served on township and school boards, in addition to shouldering problems of his community. In 1935, the Marshalls retired from active work and moved into Verdigre, where they lived for 14 years. Each New Year's Day was of special significance to Mr. and Mrs. Marshall for on this day was the anniversary of his birth and the wedding of the couple, which took place New Year's Eve. Each year they were honored by their children on their wedding anniversary. However, New Year in 1949, found Mr. Marshall ill in a Norfolk hospital, separated from Mrs. Marshall for the first time in their married life. He passed away in the hospital, Friday, January 14 at noon, at the age of 88 years and 14 days. Surviving are his wife; three daughters and four sons; Angie (Charles) Pavlik of Verdigre; Steffi (Anton) Juracek of Snyder, Okla.; Lucy (George) Barta of Lynch; Edward and Louis of Verdigre; George and Fred of Walnut; 20 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
