Death was due to complications of old age. Mrs. Kalina was 82. Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Vining, conducted by the Rev. Father A. W. Chihak and attended by a large crowd of relatives, neighbors and friends. Six grandsons served as casket bearers. Burial was in the Petranek cemetery. Mrs. Kalina, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Turek, was born October 15, 1860, in Checho-Slovakia, and was married in the old country to Frank Kalina. The couple came to America fifty-five years ago, and farmed many years west of Irving. Her husband died 22 years ago in the same home. Three of Mrs. Kalina’s thirteen children preceded her in death. A son, James R. Kalina, was killed in action in France during the first World War. The Elberon post of the American Legion was named in his honor. A son, Anton, of Belle Plaine, died in 1936, and a third son died in infancy. Surviving the mother are John and Frank of Elberon; Joe, Charles, and Fred, of Irving; Mrs. L. J. Novotny, (Fanny), Clutier; Mrs. F. P. Kratoska (Agnes), Chelsea; Mrs. James Formanek (Barbara) and Mrs. Fred Dvorak (Stella), of Irving; and Mrs. Leonard Fauerbach (Rose), of Dysart. Mrs. Kalina was a devoted member of St. Mary’s church of Vining, and had been a member of the Rosary society of that parish more than 20 years. She was one of the few Gold Star mothers of the first World War yet living in Tama county.
