Ashmore died at her home near Vermillion Sunday after a lingering illness and thus closed the book of life for another one of the pioneers of the Big Sioux Valley. The remains were brought to Hawarden and the funeral which was largely attended by the early settlers still living here, was held Tuesday afternoon from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Scott and interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery. Reverend John Erb, pastor of the Baptist Church, conducted the services. Frances Ione Newton was born June 25, 1842, at Akron, Ohio, and died at her home near Vermillion in Clay County, South Dakota, October 26, 1913, at the age of 71years, 4 months, and 1 day. She was one of a family of fifteen children of whom four brothers and two sisters are still living. At the age of ten years she moved with her parents to Hazel Green, Wisconsin. On May 12, 1868, she was united in marriage to Ulysses R. Ashmore at James, Wisconsin. Eight children were born to this union, all of whom survive and were present at the funeral. The children are Mrs. Walter Scott and Will Ashmore of this city, Mrs. William Weller of Los Angeles, Mrs. Chas. Gilman of Lemmon, South Dakota, Mrs. A.B. Hilton of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Samuel and Ulysses Ashmore of Vermillion, and Miss Eunice Ashmore of Hawarden. E.G. Collins, a son by a former marriage, reside at Tulsa, Oklahoma, but was unavoidably prevented from being here. The death of Mrs. Ashmore marks the first break in the ties of the immediate family, she leaving to mourn her loss, besides the above named children, her husband, Ulysses R. Ashmore, who has enjoyed her companionship for over 45 years. In 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Ashmore moved from Wisconsin to Union County, South Dakota, where they resided until 1900, when they have continued to reside until the present time. She with her husband endured the hardships and privations incident to early pioneer days in the Big Sioux Valley and their home always radiated cheerfulness even under the most trying circumstances. She was a good wife and loving mother and well beloved by everyone because she was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. In early life she united with the Christian Church and ever remained steadfast in the Faith. The bereaved relatives have the sincere sympathy of many sorrowing friends. Ashmore,
