Ashmore Dies in a Sioux City Hospital Took Homestead in Union County, South Dakota, More Than Forty-Five Years Ago U. R. Ashmore, one of the pioneer homesteaders of the Big Sioux Valley, died at the German Lutheran hospital in Sioux City last Saturday, July 29th. He underwent an operation about four weeks ago and was thought to be recovering, until a short time fefore his death when he had a relapse and the end came very quickly. His daughter, Eunice Ashmore, was with him during this time. The body was brought to Hawarden and the funeral was held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Scott, Monday afternoon. Rev. A. F. Eldridge, pastor of the Congregational church, preached the funeral sermon. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. The deceased was born at Jamestown, Wis., Nov. 10, 1846. He was united in marriage with Frances Newton Collins at Jamestown May 12, 1868. They removed to Union county, S.D., in 1871, and took a homestead a few miles west of Hawarden. They resided in Union county until 1900 when they moved to Clay county, S.D., and resided on a farm near Vermillion. His wife died Oct. 26, 1913. Eight children were born to them seven of whom are still living. One daughter, Mrs. Chas Gilman, died May 16, 1916, at Lemmon, S.D. The children living are: Mrs. Walter Scott. Wm Ashmore, Hawarden; Mrs. W. M. Weller, San Bernardino, Calif, Mrs. L. D. Hilton, U.R.Ashmore, Jr., Granite Falls, Minn. Samuel Ashmore, Wakonda, S.D. Eunice Ashmore, Hawarden.
