Fran and her husband Leo were fans of Selby Legion and Laker baseball. In failing health, Fran died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in Selby at the age of 76. Born at the Lincoln Hospital in Aberdeen on March 26, 1930, to William J. and Elizabeth (Himrich) Sawinsky Sr., Fran grew up on her parents' farm south of Selby. She attended the rural Surrey School for two years and then the Selby Public School, graduating with the Class of 1947. She received her two-year teacher's certificate from Northern State College in Aberdeen, and then taught in Selby from 1949 to 1953 while working on her bachelor's degree. In 1954 she received her BS degree in elementary education from and her masters degree in elementary school administration in 1964. She taught sixth grade, middle school reading, and language arts in McLaughlin for 37 years, retiring in 1991. She married Leo W. Maier at the Selby United Methodist Church on Aug. 14, 1973. Following her retirement, they moved to Selby where she did tutoring at the Selby School. Since Nov. 16, 2006, she had resided at the Good Samaritan Center in Selby. She was a lifelong member of Selby United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and belonged to the UMW, collecting over one million pop tabs for the UMW for Ronald McDonald House. Fran is survived by one sister, Carol (James) Jay of Tyler, Texas, six nieces and five nephews. Her father on March 21, 1954, her mother on Oct. 25, 1984, her husband on June 25, 2002, and her brother William J. Sawinsky Jr. on Sept. 11, 1994, preceded her in death. The funeral for Frances was Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the Selby United Methodist Church with Pastor Dave Heintzleman officiating. Casketbearers were Wayne Maier and Heather Maier of McLaughlin, Ron Maier of Mobridge, Bill Sawinsky of Webster, Laura Sawinsky of Pierre, and Steve Sawinsky of Selby. Honorary bearers were Lesley Szczepaniak of Clarksville, Tenn., Donna Sine and Glenda Redding of Sioux Falls, Vern Maier of Shawnee, Kan., and Eileen Kuhlmann of Mesquite, Texas. Modeste Marin and Everett Russell were ushers. Burial followed at Selby Memorial Gardens with the Lien Funeral Home of Bowdle in charge of arrangements.
