Crossed plains in Sixties Another of the early pioneers of the Cowlitz Valley went to her reward Monday afternoon when Mrs. Frances R. Orton passed away at her home on Cowlitz Avenue. As a bride Mrs. Orton crossed the plains by ox team in 1860. In 1864 the family located at Freeport and she has continued to reside here since except for 16 years spent in Oregon. Mr. Orton passing away in 1903. She has seen Washington develop from the wilderness stage into a rich and populous community (commonwealth), and in that development she and the other pioneers played an important and courageous part. Frances R. Snook was born in Iowa, February 15, 1841 and would have reached her 81 year next Wednesday. She was united in marriage to N. S. Orton in May 1860, in the state of Wisconsin, and they left on their wedding day on their journey to the great and then practically unknown West. She was the mother of ten children, five of whom survive. They are Mrs. Florence Patton of Olympia; H. O. Orton, S. A. Orton, Mrs. Nora Patton and Mrs. Frances Leonard of this city; also thirteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She was of most kindly and generous disposition, and her long life has been devoted to those she loved. Until a short time before her death she was in good health considering her age, and a short time ago she was an attendant at a party for "Grandma" Hartzell. Funeral services were conducted from the Van Note Chapel this afternoon by J. G. Gay. Interment was in the Catlin cemetery, where her husband was buried.
