Mr. Hapgood had been a resident of this community for the past thirty years, and was the oldest man in Kingsley. Francis Calvin Hapgood was born January 17, 1852, at La Motte, Jackson county, Iowa, and died at his home in Kingsley December 7th, at the age of 88 years, 10 months and 20 days. He moved with his parents to Bankston, Dubuque county. At age of five, his father died, but he remained with his mother on farm, excepting for a short period until he became of age. He received his early education in a district school, which he attended until fourteen years of age, when he entered the Epworth Seminary at Epworth, Iowa, where he received a fair education. Thinking a course in a business training school essential to success in life, he resolved to attend such a one, and thus completed a course at the Davenport Commercial College, at Davenport, Iowa. After obtaining his diploma at this school he took the first work offered him, and commenced teaching school. On June 6th, 1878 he was married to Annie Isabel Squiers, of Epworth, Iowa. Soon after he settled on a farm in Fayette county. Later they moved to Farley, Iowa, residing there about eight years. Then he purchased land in Grand Meadow, Cherokee County, where he lived until he moved to Kingsley 30 years ago. For many years of his life he was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges. He leaves to mourn his departure his widow, Arnie, one daughter, Hattie Taglauer of Kingsley; two grandchildren, Mrs. Gladys Miller of Holstein and Mrs. Bernice Brennan of Storm Lake, Iowa; and four great-grandchildren. One son, Edsel Roy, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at two o'clock Monday afternoon from the home, with Rev. L.T. Proctor of the Congregational Church of Sibley, Iowa, officiating. Interment was in Grand Meadow Cemetery.
