Read More	"Obituary Francis C. Fanning died at St. Joseph, Missouri, Friday, June 25, 1909, following an operation for appendicitis, aged 57 years, 8 months and 6 days. Mr. Fanning was born in Logan county, Illinois, October 19, 1861. With his parents he came to Johnson county, Nebraska, at the age of four years, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Eliza Tolleth December 24, 1884, who has been his constant and faithful companion through the varied and trying experiences of the years that followed, she being at this bedside at the time of his death. He was the father of nine children. Bessie, the eldest, died in childhood. Mrs. Laura Wheeler, who resides near Wauneta, Clarence, Dessie, Harry, Halbert, Eva, Cleo and Vernon who are yet at home, to comfort and assist the widowed mother. In 1887 he became a permanent resident of Chase county. He was a man of industry and frugality. Undaunted by the trying times through which pioneer residents had to pass, he kept steadily pushing ahead and although death came at the prime of life, he leaves his family a comfortable fortune. Mr. Fanning was a man of deep conviction. He hated shams of any kind intensely. Religiously he was not a member of any society but ever in quest of truth, and a constant and reverent attendant at all religious services. During the winter of 1908 he professed conversion and had set for himself the task of determining the true church, a task which apparently he did not live to complete. He was well known throughout the county. Words of commendation and praise for his benevolence and self sacrificing spirit are heard everywhere and the community feels deeply the loss so abruptly sustained. He became violently ill with appendicitis on Friday before his death. No time was lost in moving him to St. Joseph, Missouri, where surgical aid could be given. Accompanied by his wife and Dr. Stewart he left Monday following his attack for the hospital, and hopes were entertained for his recovery until shortly before his death when it became apparent that medical attention and surgical skill had not loosed the icy hand of our common enemy. The funeral occurred from the family residence on the east divide, on Sunday, June 27, conducted by Elder David G. Wine. It was one of the most largely attended funeral ever seen in the county. Wauneta lodge, A.O.U.W. were in attendance and acted as pall bearers at the residence. The Imperial lodge met the procession at the fair grounds and escorted it to the cemetery, Mt. Hope, where the body was laid to rest, in a labyrinth of flowers given as tokens of sympathy and appreciation. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the entire community. As husband, father, neighbor and citizen all unite in words of appreciation, and bow in sorrow and humble submission to the inevitable." Date and newspaper unknown.
