He was the son of Amand François Hugo and Caroline Boutillette (Boutyette), early pioneers of Bay County, and was the oldest of their six children. He was named after his paternal grandfather, in the French tradition. Early in his childhood, his parents and maternal grandfather purchased a large tract of land in eastern Hampton township, less than a mile from the shores of the Saginaw bay. They pulled countless stumps left by the logging industry to create quite a fertile farm. As his parents aged, they sold the farm to Frank and his brother, Vic, who farmed it together, in addition to other farms in the area that they bought up as they became available. On May 10, 1892, he married Margaret (Maggie) Wiedyk at St. John the Evangelist Church in Essexville. The following February, she blessed him with a son, Amand Nicholas. Tragically, complications set in and on February 26, 1893, she died, less than 10 months after their marriage. He raised baby Amand (Amie) with the help of his parents and his sister Genevieve. Ten years later, when the daughter of his neighbors across the road, Hattie Tacey Rivard, lost her husband in a tragic industrial accident, she moved home. She had two children from her first marriage, Nellie and Albert. In time, she and Frank began dating and were married on May 2, 1905, also at St. John the Evangelist Church. Together, they raised the three children from their first marriages, as well as four they had together, all of whom survived him. Clement (Isabelle) Hugo Maureen (Joseph) VanOchten Charles (Ann) Hugo Zoa (Edward) Gray On the evening of March 16, 1933, Frank took time during a break at a Farmers' Union meeting to run across the road to buy a cigarette. On his way back, he was hit by an automobile whose driver was blinded by the lights of an auto coming from the opposite direction. His injuries were to his left, from his chest to his knees. He went into shock from the blood loss and was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Bay City. In addition to his children and stepchildren, he left his brother, Victor (Louise) Hugo of Hampton, and four sisters: Catherine (Ernest) Groulx, Hampton; Genevieve Hugo, Bay City; Marie (Albert) VanPoppelen, Detroit; Caroline (William) Tardiff, Bangor. His funeral mass was held at St. John the Evangelist Church, with burial at Old St. Patrick cemetery. TY to Jan Colton for all this bio info!
