THE HISTORY OF HENRY COUNTY, IOWA submitted by Delores Eckroat March FRANCIS HOCKETT Another Quaker pioneer of Henry County, Iowa was Francis Hockett who resided there from 1838 to 1870. He was born 27 February 1818 at Cherry Grove, Randolph County, Indiana to Isaac and Sarah (Frazier) Hockett. Records show that he was not quite 18 years old when he took as his bride Rebecca D. Hartley on the 16th December 1835. Rebecca was just five days short of her 17th birthday. They were married at Cherry Grove, Randolph County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Thomas and Barbara (Loar) Hartley, being born 21 December 1818 in Hamilton County, Ohio. They were married but two years when they came to Henry County, Iowa along with the parents and grandparents of Francis. Some of the brothers and sister of Rebecca also settled in Henry County. Lewelling; Calvin W. 12 February 1839-14 August 1862, m.17 November 1858 Sarah Jane Bench; Gideon Theodore 6 May 1841-, m.18 August 1863 Mary Harris; Elizabeth Ann 4 May 1843-no further record; Barbara L. 24 April 1845-m.29 September 1870 Wyatt Albertson; Joseph James 6 January 1847-after 1900, unmarried; Debra A. 15 February 1849-, m.c. 1868 Albert Dillon, m. 2nd c.1874 Joseph Blair; Thomas Elwood 15 March 1851-1920, m.16 September 1871 Ellen Eliza Haworth; Lydia C. 7 April 1853-4 November 1922, m.4 June 1870 Zimri Ellis; Mary Magdalene 4 September 1855-no further record; Henry M. 1 February 1859-after 1900, m.c. 1800 Theresa-. Francis and Rebecca could be found in Hardin County, Iowa as late as 1886. He died between 1886 and 1900. Rebecca was living in Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa with son James in 1900. HISTORY OF HARDIN COUNTY, IOWA (1883) Francis Hockett, one of the oldest settlers of Iowa, was born in Randolph county, Indiana, February 2, 1818. His parents were natives of North Carolina, and were pioneers of Ohio and Indiana. Here Mr. Hockett's early life was spent, and he grew to manhood in the same county where he was born. On December 15, 1835, he was married to Miss Rebecca D. Hartley, who was born in Ohio, December 21, 1818. They continued to live in Randolph county until in the spring of 1838, when they removed to Iowa, which was then a Territory, settling in what is now Henry county, near Salem. They afterward settled in the adjoining county of Lee, where they lived until the year 1863, when they removed to Hardin county, first settling in Providence township, and, in 1870, locating in Grant township, on section 12, where they now reside. There has been born to them twelve children, ten of whom are living. The oldest, Norton, of whom mention is made elsewhere, was born October 18, 1836; Calvin W., born February 12, 1839; Gideon, born May 6, 1841; Eliza A., born May 4, 1843; Barbara L., born April 24, 1845; James, born January 6, 1847; Deborah A., born February 15, 1849; Thomas E., born March 15, 1851; Lydia, born April 7, 1853; Mary Magdalene, born September 4, 1855; Henry M., born February 1, 1859; all but one living at present in Hardin county—Ezra, living in Nebraska; and all married but one—James. Mr. Hockett has always followed farming, and has a farm of 80 acres, with good house and orchard on it, well protected by natural timber, it being nearly all the timber there is in the township. Mr. Hockett and family belong to the Society of Friends. During the early times he was familiar and friendly with the Indians, over whom the famous Black Hawk was Chief, and was well acquainted with his son, whom he describes as being a finely-formed, intelligent and interesting man.
