The deceased was born November 20, 1823 in Decatur County, Indiana, and lived to reach the good old age of three score and ten, lacking a few days. In 1841 he was married to Miss Mary Ferguson of the above named place, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Ferguson. The deceased was born November 20, 1823 in Decatur County, Indiana, and lived to reach the good old age of three score and ten, lacking a few days. In 1841 he was married to Miss Mary Ferguson of the above named place, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Ferguson. Subsequently, he made a public profession of religion, and united with the Missionary Baptist Church. Later on he removed with his family to Mahaska County, Iowa; and was there licensed to preach the gospel. In course of time he was ordained to the full work of the ministry of the Baptist denomination, in which he remained until his death. During the life time of his first wife there were born to them five children. Two of the number died in infancy, the others, John F., Zachariah, and Wesley are still living and are the heads of families. After her death, he was subsequently married to Miss Sarah Jane [Sperry] Drummond, his wife at the time of his death. There was born to them three children Frank, Leila, and Guy, all still living, In 1874 he and family came to what is now known as the vicinity of New Salem, Kansas, their home all these years, excepting a few weeks of their recent residence in the neighboring town of Burden. In regard to valuable work done by Elder McEwen in his Master's cause, it may be said that the preached the blessed gospel with good results, for more than a quarter of a century. In addition to his work in Iowa, the community of New Salem and also that of Floral are much better morally in consequence of his ministry. May no doubt still cherish a pleasant recollection of his kindly assistance rendered in a special meeting of more than two weeks at New Salem, less than one year ago. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works follow them." The vicinity of New Salem having been for so many years the home of Elder McEwen and family, his remains were brought from Burden Saturday afternoon, October 28, to New Salem Presbyterian Church for funeral exercises, Rev. C. P. Graham, officiating, after which the burial took place at the New Salem Cemetery amid a large company of friends. The sorrowing widow, daughter, and sons may feel assured of the sympathy of many hearts in and around New Salem. The Industrial Free Press, November 2, 1893
