Francis Marion Baker was born in Decolt (sic) county (sic), Mo., March 21, 1841, died at his home, Oak. Neb., March 8, 1919, at the age of 77 years 11 months and 13 days. He spent his boyhood days in Missouri on a farm and in a log cabin, he saw the frontier and quite often felt the pangs of its teeth; as he grew to manhood and former the sturdy, true and manly habits which were exemplefied (sic) in his after life. When a young man he went to Polk City, Iowa, and in this time became acquainted with and married his one lady companion when Miss Louisa Davis the oldest daughter of a then prosperous farmer, Abe Davis, this union took place Sept. 8, 1861 at Polk City, Ia. It was here that the two oldest children were born, just before he entered service of the army, when he was called south to do his bit for the home of his birth and the dear ones at home. He belonged to 44 Ia. Inft. vol., and served to the end of the war. After the war he and his family moved near Council Bluffs, Ia., and then on to North county (sic) and Atchison county (sic), Mo. Being as his father before him, he spent with his little family many hours in the covered wagon drawn by four oxen and beneath the clear skies and the many sweet breaths of pure air. Still being handy and of a push on frontier spirit, in 1876 he came on west with his family, and with his strength of early manhood and a desire to give his then 6 children homes in the west, he located on the S.E. 1-4 of Section 23 township 3 range 5, where he lived for about 15 years. Here he educated his children, gave them the best of life and a start in the world. From here he helped to locate and start the town of Oak. Having built the first hotel and meat market, then in his golden hours settled down with his wife to spend his few remaining days. They laid to rest, three infants, but have six children to cheer them in their old days, all of whom were by his bedside and saw the smile on his lips as he bade them farewell and answered the call on that shining shore, except Issie who is at her home In Topeka, Kans., was not able to be here. He leaves wife and the following children to mourn his death: Elmer, who lives on his farm near Oak with his family, Call, who now lives near Hudson, Wisc., on the farm with his family, William, the youngest boy, is also with his helpmate farming near Naponee, Nebr., Mrs. Lewis Nichols, lives with her two boys on a ranch in Cherry county (sic), Nebr., Issie and Gertrude, reside at Topeka, Kans. While Pa Baker did no great things in life, yet he will leaves in the minds and hearts of many, that true "Christian Spirit" which was felt by all who came in contact with him. He also leaves a sister in Idaho, and a brother in Okla. Giving a long and honored life he today is among she blest over there. He leaves many friends as well as relatives to mourn his departure. Our loss is heaven's gain. Brother Baker made his peace with God and joined the Free Will Baptist church (sic) while in Missouri. When the family settled here in 1876, he joined the U.B. Church of which he has been a faithful member to the last, lending an ever ready hand to help and support the cause of Christ. During his illness he praised God for his goodness. His last words in song were: "I am going home to die no more." "Blessed are the dead which die in the lord, from henceforth; yea saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them."
