Marion and Lizzy Cox by Alice Horn In the early 1900's Mel Blackmer, who was a real estate agent, went to Illinois to interest people in buying land in south Dakota. Many families including F.M. Marion Cox came out and bought land. A few others who came from that part of Illinois were the ttom Wilsons, George Gugates, Bliss McCartneys, Moores and Jeffries. Marion Cox bought land two miles north and a mile east of St. Lawrence in 1907. He returned to Gays, Illinois, packed up his family, wife Lizzy, two sons Clyde and Stanley and daughter Edna in an immigrant car and moved them to their new home. Clyde, who was 20 years old the day they arrived in St. Lawrence had stowed away in the immigrant car. Wen Clyde was 21 years old he went to Perkins County where he proved up on a homestead claim. Nelle Shores, his sweetheart from Illinois, came out there and took a homestead. They were married and lived there a few years. Nelle's mother and sister Mable also went out and took a homestead. Their quarters joined each other but each had to have a house and so much improvement on it. Due to bad weather and hard times they eventually moved back to Hand County in 1915 with their two sons, Francis and Paul. Alice was born here in March, 1916. There were many prairie fires back then. One came from the north west. Mrs. Cox, my grandmother, was home alone with her small daughter, Edna. She took her out in the middle of a plowed field east of the house till the fire was put out. The buildings were left. Edna died of diphtheria at the age of six years old. They were still on the farm. In 1911 Marion, 'Grandpa Cox", built a house in St. Lawrence, and moved to town. He rented the farm to Walter Brown. In 1919 we moved to this farm. Stanley, who had just returned from France, lived with us and farmed. He had served in the Armed Forces during World War I. After three years another farm was bought four miles north east of that farm. We moved and Stanley got married to Fern Horn and stayed on the home place till his death in 1930. In the meantime grandma Cox had died in 1925, grandpa died in 1929. My dad Clyde died in 931. My sister Lois was born in 930, three weeks before Stanley died. He never saw her. After Clyde died, mother stayed on the farm till I, Alice was married to Earl Horn in 1937. We raised eight children.
