F.M. Delaney, Who Came Here When Eight Years Old, Passes Away. Francis Marion Delaney, aged sixty-three years, a resident of this county for the last fifty-five years, died at his home on First avenue, Chico Vecino, yesterday afternoon after an illness extending over several years. The deceased was well known in this vicinity, having been educated in the schools of Butte county and having been engaged in the farming and stock raising business ever since his marriage, thirty-three years ago. Delaney was born in Newton county, Missouri, July 23, 1849. With his family he started for California May 5, 1857, by ox-team. The pack train was one of the largest that ever crossed the Rockies and was so large that the Indians did not dare to attack it. He arrived in Chico Nov. 8, six months after leaving Missouri. Since that time, Delaney has always lived in Butte county, part of that time on the old Hicks place on the Shasta road. He went to the public schools here and also attended Col. Batchelder’s school a number of years. In 1877 he was married to Miss Emma N. Brison. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emma Delaney; four daughters, Mrs. C.H. Jackson, Mrs. J.F. Clarke, Mrs. B.D. Woodruffe, all of Chico, and Mrs. G.W. Overton of Coutolenc; the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. Cynthia Small, Mrs. J.H. Harris, D.T. Hicks, H.A. Hicks and C.W. Hicks, all of Chico, and I.M. Speegle of Chico, who is an uncle. The funeral will be conducted by Mrs. M.E. Engel from the family home in Chico Vecino at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Rev. C. Todd Clark will officiate. ~~~~ 63-year-old Francis Marion Delaney was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on November 25, 1912.
