His passing was due to old age and complications. He had been in failing health for the past two years, but his condition did not become critical until the last two weeks of his illness. Francis Marion Mark was born on February 5, 1862 at Verdon, Neb. and died on Saturday, January 24, 1942, He was the oldest of ten children. The deceased spent his boyhood days in Verdon and located in Creighton in 1885. Upon his arrival here, he was employed several years as a brakeman on the railroad. After losing two fingers in an accident coupling cars, he gave up the work. In 1892 he was united in wedlock to Lora Lucretia Nihart at Niobrara. To this union six children were born. Following their marriage they resided on farms in this community for several years and then moved to Creighton. During his life time he applied himself to different types of work, and in pioneer days he was known among threshing crews as Engineer Mark. He also operated concessions at county fairs, carnivals and picnics. Mr. Mark had always been active during his life time and it was during the last several years he was unable to do any work. Those who mourn his passing are his widow, four children, Myrtle Russell of Carroll, Ralph of Salem, Oregon, William of Creighton and Rachel Roberts of Midwest, Wyo. A son, Harry and a daughter, who died in infancy, preceded him in death. Other surviving relatives are a brother of Washington and two sisters, Mary Nihart of Creighton and Mrs. Rose Griffith of Verdon and numerous friends. Funeral rites were held on Monday afternoon at 1:45 from the home and at 2 o'clock from the Hengstler & Son Funeral Home. Rev. Anderson, pastor of the Federated church was in charge of the services. A nice assemblage of friends gathered to pay a last tribute. The casket was surrounded with a number of floral bouquets. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.
