Francis McDonald, a prominent farmer of Douglas township and a life long citizen of the county, dropped dead Tuesday evening. Mr. McDonald was sitting in his chair talking to his brother when without a moment's warning he fell to the floor dead. He gasped two or three times after his brother had picked him up. Francis McDonald, a prominent farmer of Douglas township and a life long citizen of the county, dropped dead Tuesday evening. Mr. McDonald was sitting in his chair talking to his brother when without a moment's warning he fell to the floor dead. He gasped two or three times after his brother had picked him up. Dr. Embree was summoned but death was practically instantaneous. Mr. McDonald had been to town two or three days previous to his death and while talking to friends had a stroke of apoplexy. He was taken to the home of Mr. Leizure and on Monday was taken to his brother's home. He had been more or less an invalid for several years. He was an honored and respected citizen of the county and the news of his death caused profound sorrow to a large circle of friends. Note: Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer. The date typed on the front page of this newspaper is Wednesday, January 18, 1898. The last 8 has a line drawn through it and replaced with a handwritten number 9. January 18, 1898, was a Tuesday. January 18, 1899, was a Wednesday. Looking at other obituaries on this page of the newspaper and comparing them to their headstones, 1899 would be the correct year. The headstone has the date of death inscribed as 1889 which is in error. The Estate was filed in Madison County, Iowa on January 21, 1899, File # 1376.
