Read More	Moved to Maryland 1869 Ripe with years, Mr. Francis Matthews, a prominent citizen of Dublin District and probably the oldest resident of Somerset county, passed away at the home of his son, Mr. Francis E. Matthews, near Pocomoke City, on Wednesday night of last week. Mr. Matthews was 94 years of age some months ago. The deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Matthews, of New Castle county, Del., and came to this county about fifty years ago, when he purchased and operated the 800 acre farm on the Pocomoke , River, known as the Rush Farm. At that time the counties in Delaware and the upper part of Maryland were the big fruit growing centers of the country and having obtained his early training in fruit growing, in his native state, he at once began the planting of large orchards and small fruits on his Maryland farm. The venture, as far as the growing of the fruit was concerned, was a great success but owing to the lade of transportation, Mr. Matthews, as well as other farmers of his neighborhood, who had followed his example and started orchards and fruit growing on a large scale, were compelled to abandon the enterprise. Twenty-five years later Mr. Matthews sold the Rush Farm and purchased and moved to the Ward Farm, adjoining Rehoboth, living there until about 18 years ago, when be and his wife moved to the home of his son, Francis E. Matthews, where he resided until his death last Wednesday. His wife died about eight years ago. Mr. Matthews was a man of untiring energy and in addition to his success as a farmer and horticulturist was a remarkable man in many ways, which made him an outstanding figure in the community in which he lived. He possessed a strong personality and was probably one of the most temperate men that ever lived. He never touched a stimulent of any kind, not even coffee and many of his friends believed that his vitality and long life was due to the cold baths which he took every morning, summer and winter. Funeral services were held at the old Presbyterian Church, at Rehoboth, of which church Mr. Matthews was an elder, on Friday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Bischof. Interment was made in the church cemetery, along side of his wife. He is survived by two sons Francis E. Mathews, of Somerset county, and Charles Matthews, of Los Angeles, Cal. The pall bearers were: Ralph Thompson, E. B. Lankford, Harry Cluff, Robert L. Cluff, Thomas Waters and Asbury Henderson. The esteem in which the deceased was held was clearly evidenced by the large number of friends and neighbors who attended the funeral. The Crisfield Times, Saturday June 5, 1926 pg. 4
