McKenzie Contributor: Donna Harkness (49618312) Big Timber Pioneer, January 21, 1915 Funeral of Old Soldier Held Last Saturday Funeral services for Francis McKenzie, a notice of which appeared in last week's Pioneer, were held at the Congregational church Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. John C. Blackman preaching the funeral sermon. Three hymns were sung by a quartette, Mesdames B. J. Kleinhesselink and Emet Roecher, George Van Houte, and Rev. Blackman. The hymns selected were: "Rock of Ages," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder." The casket was draped in the stars and stripes under which he had served for many years. With a handsome display of flowers was sent in by relatives and sympathizing friends. Interment was made in Mountain View Cemetery. The pallbearers were F. M Lamp, Frank Peck, Harvey Clouse, A. A. Lamp, Matt Michels, and M.N. Nelson. Francis McKenzie was born near Oregon, Ohio, in 1839. With his parents, he removed to Wisconsin when 11 years old. At the age of 21 years, young McKenzie enlisted in Company D, sixth Wisconsin. Because of ill health, he was discharged after 18-month service. Later he re-enlisted and served until the close of the war when he settled in Minnesota. Mr. McKenzie was married to Miss Lora Rose, Jan. 19, 1867. Of this union, five children were born, two of whom are livings- Mrs. Flora McArthur, of SanDieFuco, Wash., and Charles McKenzie of the Boulder, who, with the aged wife, are left to morn his loss. There are also 12 grandchildren three of whom were present at the funeral services. Mr. McKenzie with his family moved to Montana in November 1893, living for a part of the time on a ranch on the south side and for the past several years in the city.
