Read More	Published Feb. 26, 2011 - Chanute, KS Francis "Wayne" Umbarger, 92, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away Friday, February 25, 2011 at the Chanute Health Care Center, Chanute, Kansas. Wayne was born in Earlton, Kansas on November 24, 1918, the son of Winnie G. and Flossie (Miller) Umbarger. He graduated from Thayer High School in 1936, Chanute Junior College in 1940, and received his Bachelor's Degree from Pittsburg State University in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Wayne was united in marriage to Betty O'Dell Braden on March 21, 1942 at the First Methodist Church in Chanute, Kansas. She preceded in him death on February 15, 2002. Wayne worked at Beech Aircraft in Wichita until being drafted. After his discharge from the Navy, Wayne worked at the First National Bank in Chanute for eleven years, then at the Bank of Commerce, retiring as Executive Vice President and 38 years of dedicated service. Wayne also served as Treasurer of the City of Chanute. He was also treasurer of the Chanute School Board for years and served as the 1st President, with 3 consecutive terms as President, of the NCCC Endowment Foundation which he helped form. He was the recipient of the NCCC Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1996. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Chanute, a lifetime member of the Cecil J. Meeker Post 1654, V.F.W. and the Masonic Lodge #103 in Chanute. Besides his dedication to his job and community, Wayne enjoyed playing golf and fishing. Wayne is survived by a son, Donald Umbarger and wife Bonnie of Chanute, KS; a daughter, Carol Glidewell and husband Glen of Sedalia, MO; grandchildren, Scott A. Muths, Shane Muths, Eric Glidewell, Doug Umbarger, Rebecca Morgan, and Marc Umbarger; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Irvin Umbarger and wife Bernice of Thayer, KS, and Gerald Umbarger and wife Eleanor of Chanute, KS. Along with his wife Betty, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Fern; and brothers, Vernie, Raymond, Leo, Myrle, and Chester. Funeral services will be Monday, February 28, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Chanute. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute, KS. Memorials in his name may be made to the First Christian Church or Horizon Hospice and may be left with the funeral home. Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
